Q. Is there a deadline for New Jersey to process an income tax refund? I didn't opt for direct deposit and, not having heard anything from the state, I am concerned that the refund may have been lost.
-- Still waiting
On that page you can learn more about the state’s tax refunds and you can check the status of your refund. Make sure to have your SSN, filing status and the exact amount of your refund handy to check your refund. Where’s My State Refund – New Jersey.
A. As the state tries to battle tax return fraud, some taxpayers are finding long delays.
There is no deadline for the state to process an income tax refund, said Michael Maye, a certified financial planner and certified public accountant with MJM Financial in Gillette.
If you filed your New Jersey return on or before the normal filing date which was April 17, 2018, you should follow up with the state.
One quick way to determine the status of your refund for 2016 or 2017 is to go to the Division of Taxation website, where you can check the status of your refund online, Maye said.
'Two pieces of information you will need to provide are your Social Security number as well as the exact amount of the refund you were expecting,' Maye said. 'In order to check the New Jersey refund status online, you will need to have filed four weeks ago for electronic filing or 12 weeks ago for paper.'
